PAKISTAN-JAPAN REAFFIRM THEIR COMMITMENT
TO STRENGTHEN BILATERAL TIES

(22-03-2018): A grand reception was hosted by the Embassy of Pakistan, Tokyo to commemorate the auspicious occasion of National Day. The reception was well attended by prominent personalities including Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Manabu Horii, President of Japan-Pakistan Parliamentarians Friendship League (JPPFL) Mr. Seishiro Eto, parliamentarians including Mr. Natsuo Yamaguchi, Member House of Councillors / Chief Representative of Komeito, Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, former Foreign Minister and Member of House of Councillors, Ms. Midori Matsushima Member House of Representatives and Head of Secretariat JPPFL and Mr. Haku Shinkun, Member House of Councillors. Moreover, Ambassadors, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, senior Japanese Government Officials, Defence Attaches, think tanks, academia, members of the media, business leaders, notables from the Civil Society and members of Pakistani Community attended the event in large number.

Ambassador Asad M. Khan in his speech highlighted the vision of the founding fathers as laid out on March 23, 1940 and the subsequent democratic struggle spearheaded by the father of the nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah which resulted in the creation of Pakistan in 1947. The Ambassador underlined the importance of close historical Pakistan-Japan relations and deep sentiment of warmth and affection that the people of the two countries share with one another. He reaffirmed that common adherence to the ideals of peace, democracy, freedom and rule of law and shared a commitment to deepening bilateral trade, investment and development cooperation provides a strong basis for a comprehensive partnership between Pakistan and Japan. The Ambassador underscored the renewed interest in both capitals to further intensify high-level exchanges and to deepen business and investment linkages. In this regard, he made special reference to the visit of Foreign Minister Taro Kono to Pakistan which provided a great opportunity to both sides to share their vision for promoting peace, stability and prosperity.

Ambassador Khan also referred to the improved security situation in Pakistan and the resultant economic turnaround duly recognized and acknowledged by International Financial Institutions and credit rating agencies. He added that JETRO’s 2017 survey rated Pakistan as the top destination for Japanese companies for expected profits and plans for expansions of operations.
The Ambassador reiterated the adherence of Pakistan to further build on the shared commitment to peace, security and prosperity to lay the foundation of an enduring partnership based on trust and mutually beneficial cooperation.

President of the JPPFL, Mr Seishiro Eto in his remarks termed Pakistan as a country with great potential in every field and progressing in the right direction. He added that Pakistan and Japan have been sharing exchanges in various fields including economy, culture, academia and politics since the establishment of the diplomatic ties and efforts would be made to further strengthen the bilateral relations in all fields. Mr. Eto also appreciated Pakistan’s firm commitment to fight out terrorism and vowed to extend full co-operation in these endeavours of Pakistan.

Honourable Manabu Horii, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs in his remarks stated that Japan and Pakistan have cordial bilateral relations since 1952 and these relations have developed further this year with the visit of Foreign Minister Mr. Taro Kono. He added that Mr. Kono appreciated the efforts of Pakistan in fighting against terrorism and pledged Japan’s full support to Pakistan in this regard. Mr. Horii also appreciated the improved security situation in Pakistan and turnaround in economic development which has shown steady growth. He stated that the Japanese Government would encourage and firmly support the activities of Japanese companies in Pakistan and make further efforts to deepen the economic ties between the two countries.

Dr. Asad Majeed Khan is a career Pakistan Foreign Service Officer. During his diplomatic career spanning over 29 years Dr. Khan has held following key positions: ►  Prior to his Ambassadorial assignment in Japan, Dr. Khan served as Additional Foreign Secretary (Americas) since August, 2016 to July 2017. ►  Served as Director General (Americas) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from June 2016 to August, 2016. In his capacity, he was the focal point for relations with the United States of America covering all its aspect. ►  Served as Director General (West Asia) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from September 2015 to February 2016. In this capacity, he was the focal point of ECO and responsible for overseeing Pakistan’s bilateral relations with Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. ►  Served as Pakistan’s Charge d’ Affaires ad interim to the United States from May 2013 to January 2014. ►  Also served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Embassy of Pakistan at Washington (DC) from March 2012 to September 2015. ►  Earlier, as Additional Secretary (Foreign Affairs) at the President’s Secretariat, Islamabad, handled a range of peace and security issues dealt by Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Defence and Narcotics, among the others. ►  As Director General (United Nations) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad (2010-2011) dealt with the entire range of multilateral issues including among other terrorism, UN peacekeeping, UN reforms, human rights and sustainable development. ►  As Minister-Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations (2004-2010) represented Pakistan in the UN’s Second Committee and the Economic and Social Council and dealt with the whole range of economic and sustainable development. During this period: ►  Acted as Chief de Cabinet to the President of the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) (Pakistan’s ECOSOC Presidency 2005). Coordinated the work of the Secretary General’s High Level Panel on System Wide coherence, on behalf of the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, who served as the Co-Chair of the Panel. ►  Also served as the Chief Coordinator for the Group of 77 during Pakistan’s Chairmanship of G-77 at the UN in New York during 2007. In this capacity, led the Group in all important economic and development related intergovernmental negotiations. ►  Also acted as the G-77 Coordinator for the 135h UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bali, Indonesia. ►  Served as the, elected Vice Chair of the Bureau of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2010-2011. ►  As Director (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) served as the focal point for all substantive preparations for the 12th SAARC Summit held in Islamabad in January 2004. ►  As Director (Economic Coordination), negotiated a number of bilateral and regional free and preferential trade agreements concluded by Pakistan during the period 2001-2004. ►  Served as Second Secretary in the Pakistan Embassy in Tokyo from 1993-1996 after undergoing language training in Japan (1990-91). ►  Also served as Desk Officer for US and India during early years of his career (1990-93). Dr. Asad earned his Doctorate in International Economic and Business Law (LL.D.) from Kyushu University Japan and has been a resource person at various academic institutions in Pakistan including International Islamic University, Lahore, University of Management Sciences, Foreign Trade Institute of Pakistan and Foreign Services Academy on International Trade, Law and WTO affairs.
